I discovered the Camp Nanowrimo on the 31st of May, which is lucky for me, since the Camp thing is held during June.http://campnanowrimo.org/campers/anyssia
It's basically the same idea as Nanowrimo (meaning, to write 50'000 words in one month/30 days). The main difference is that there isn't a forum like for Nanowrimo, with 50 posts a day and 2'000 people talking excitedly about their novel.
You only have to register and ask for a cabin and they'll automatically install you with five strangers (you can ask for them to keep it in the same age people and/or same kind of novel (adventure/historical/...)).
It's really a very basic Nanowrimo.http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/anyssia
Last year, it happened during July and August (meaning, 2 nano camp), this year it's June and August. As I said, I only found out about it right the day before it was due to start.
Since I'm still on sick leave, I thought it might be a nice way to pass the time. Also, let's not kid ourselves, but I just can't resist a Nanowrimo. :D
Anyway, it's unexpectedly nice because, while I don't exactly like the cabin system (you have to be really lucky to get interesting people. I had to change four times of cabin before I got one mildly nice), I get to talk on IRC to the people I met during the last nano. It's pleasing to speak French for once, even if I tend to mix French and English by mistake (also, same timezone \o/ that
is really great).
Also, while my previous novels/fanfics have never been finished, I actually like this one and like the way I'm writing it. Well, the second fic at least. I started this nano with a time travel Harry Potter idea, but I twisted it really badly and abandoned it after 12'000 words because it was so awful.
The one I'm writing now is a bit of a shameful pleasure. It's a... Don't scream please, I know, I know, it's awful, I can't even believe myself :D. But it's a Mary Sue Harry Potter fanfic.
read right. A Mary Sue fanfiction. Would you believe it that it's the first Mary Sue I ever wrote, even if it's been ten years since I started writing fanfictions?
Here is a rough summary:
Mary Sue Alert! Hagrid was nice and all, but he really could have told Harry how to access the Hogwarts Express, because there certainly wasn’t a 9 3/4 platform at King’s Cross! But thankfully for Harry, a girl realized his dilemma and offered to help him discover the Wizarding World.
I know I'm much too old to write a Mary Sue, but, what the hell, I've always wanted to have someone guide naive!Harry through the Wizarding World. Why not 'me', since it would have been way too hypocritical to suddenly push Moon/Greengrass/Zabini/... or any other kid in his way ;)
I started writing while I was a the hospital, last month, and copied it on computer this week-end. (Incidentally, it's the last time I write a fic on paper then copy it, because 8'000 to copy/20 A4 recto verso handwritten pages are really hell to re-read/type).
Today, I wrote enough that the story is now at 14'000 words and it's coming along nicely. It's nothing extraordinary nor really original, but it's fun to write, so I think I'll finish it and actually post it. Maybe ;)
